For some people, getting into wine is pretty confusing.   What you find out, though, is that the best way to learn is by doing.  

Try this:   go to the wine shop, talk to them about different wines and occasions for wine and have them recommend different wines for you to try.   Sounds like a hefty assignment because when you find someone you enjoy talking with, you'll also find that your interest will grow and, along with it, your list!

Well, here's how you can taste a lot of different wines.   Give your merchant friend a budget and let him or her put together a mixed case.   It may be all reds.   Could be all whites.   Maybe you want a combo.   It's your decision.

Then get some sticky notes and write why you chose each one, along with its price, and stick it on the bottle.  As you taste each, you can then make your own notes about the wine on the same sheet.   

A mixed case or two and some Post-its® and before you know it you'll have a really good idea about what you like.
