Wine of the Week!

Nipozzano Riserva 2003 Chianti Rufina   $20

Nipozzano Chianti Ruffina 2003 Riserva - Wine Experience wine of the weekCiao!  We’re here with another wine experience Wine of the Week choice for you!

Why “Ciao?”  Easy.  Our pick this week is Nipozzano Riserva 2003 Chianti Rufina.

Rufina is the Chianti zone northeast of Florence and this is one of the best known of the Rufina wines.  It’s a lively Chianti that’s deep purple in color, sort of like the violets you can get a whiff of when you take a sniff.

It’s lively because, in addition to the big cherry flavors and little sense of leathery earthiness, there’s the acidity that makes it great with lots of foods.

What you’ll love about it – in addition to being under twenty dollars – is that it’s equally at home with pasta or pork roast, cheeseburgers or chicken breasts, or even with just a wedge of aged parmesan cheese and some olives.

Nipozzano Riserva comes to us from the famous estates of the Frescobaldi’s, Tuscan winemakers for over seven hundred years.

That’s a lot of history to uncork here at The Wine Experience with our wine of the week, Nipozzano Riserva 2003 Chianti Rufina.

Notes and Comments:

A luminous, deep purple. The nose shows elegance and grace, over power, with initial balsamic aromas evolving into a fruity medley highlighting bottled cherries, followed closely by notes of spice and leather. A pronounced acidity makes for a wine of appealing leanness, bolstered by dense but judicious tannins. The finish is clean and dry

The Castle Nipozzano was constructed around the year 1000 as a defensive stronghold after reconstructing around the 1400's the villas cellars became the center of local wine production.

Today the Castle houses the central wine cellars, where the production takes place. Nipozzano is also the center of hospitality and culinary programs of the Frescobaldi. The property is found in the heart of the Chianti Rufina, stretching across of 550 hectares at an altitude of 300 to 450 meters. 160 hectares cultivate the vines of Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Syrah.

Past Recommendations, Picks, and Wines of the Week

Notes on our Wines of the Week, Recommendations, and Picks:

When you read our thoughts, please remember that you may think differently.  A particular wine may be your favorite and not on our list.  Well, don't stop buying it because of that.  In fact, you may want to email us and let us know about it. These are our opinions but our FIRST recommendation is to go by your own palate.

A couple of other thoughts . . . first, prices are approximate.  They'll vary.  Second, different vintages mean different grapes and different tastes so our recommendation for a 2000 Merlot may not hold for 2001.

And lastly, we remind you to drink responsibly!  Now, all that said, here is a summary of  links to our suggestions.  Find one (or more) and pop the cork!
