Wine of the Week!

Monte Antico 2003   $10        Monte Antico Wine

Monte Antico WineOrder the pizza or stir the sauce!  We have a wine of the week that will have you ready for anything Italian.  And our choice is…Monte Antico 2003.

It’s a terrific value from Tuscany at about ten dollars a bottle and that makes it the ideal addition to any bowl of spaghetti!

It’s mostly sangiovese and has the character you would expect from much pricier wine.  The black cherry flavor and bright finish make this a very tasty food wine…and a wine that’s easy to like as the “house red” you can sip whenever you want.

The winemaker seeks out the best of many Tuscan vineyards.  It’s classified as an IGT meaning typical of the region since the grapes come from all over Tuscany, not just one place.

Monte Antico is high quality wine worth looking for if you want bang for your buck.  High quality, flavorful, affordable.  C’mon, what’s not to like?

Our wine of the week, Monte Antico 2003.

Winemaker’s notes and comments: Ideal quality in vineyard and winery yield a food-friendly red with all the classic Tuscan seductiveness, delicious fruit, velvety, extract-fraught texture, full body, beautiful finish and superb balance.

This Sangiovese varietal is the result of the synergy between Italian wine specialist Neil Empson and renowned winemaker Franco Bernabei. The best grapes are selected from prime Tuscan hillsides to produce wines that are perfectly blended and aged in oak barrels, so as to achieve consistent quality with each vintage. Its full body and lush, fruity flavor make it a perfect match for cheese, pasta, and all meat dishes. Serve at room temperature.

"Lovely plum and berry character, with loads of ripe fruit. Full-bodied, with velvety tannins and a long finish. Delicious. Best ever under this label. A super value in super Tuscan. Drink now through 2007"

Ideal quality in vineyard and winery yield a food-friendly red with all the classic Tuscan seductiveness – delicious fruit, velvet texture, and forward appeal – and at the same time, a cellar life far beyond its price tag.

Dark ruby in color, its bouquet of leather, earth, herbs, black cherries, licorice and plums is confirmed on the medium to full-bodied palate – round, spicy, elegant, attractively fruity and extremely versatile with any fare from pasta or risotto, to meat, fowl and cheese.

In other words: food-friendly, pocket-friendly, all-around simpatico.

Notes on our Wines of the Week, Recommendations, and Picks:

When you read our thoughts, please remember that you may think differently.  A particular wine may be your favorite and not on our list.  Well, don't stop buying it because of that.  In fact, you may want to email us and let us know about it. These are our opinions but our FIRST recommendation is to go by your own palate.

A couple of other thoughts . . . first, prices are approximate.  They'll vary.  Second, different vintages mean different grapes and different tastes so our recommendation for a 2000 Merlot may not hold for 2001.

And lastly, we remind you to drink responsibly!  Now, all that said, here is a summary of  links to our suggestions.  Find one (or more) and pop the cork!
