Wine of the Week!
B
arons de Lafite Rothschild Escudo Rojo 2003 $13
       Listen Now

This week we have a terrific Wine Experience wine of the week pick from Chile that comes from a very famEscudo Rojo Wineous heritage.  The wine is Escudo Rojo 2003 from the Maipo Valley of Chile.

For about thirteen dollars this is a complex and juicy red that’s made to order for everyday occasions.  It’s made of a blend of mostly Cabernet, Merlot, and Cab Franc to create a wine that gives up plumy fruit flavors along with mocha and cedar.

There’s a lot of taste in this thirteen dollar bottle!  That might be because it’s made by France’s very famous Lafite Rothschild.  The Escudo Rojo is a product of their expansion into the sunny and ripe wine country that is Chile and it’s a great combination of Old World know how and New World style.

Treat it like a Bordeaux with food, but like the everyday value it is with your wallet.

Lafite Rothschild Escudo Rojo 2003 is the wine of the week for you.

Wine on the Radio – December 29, 2006

Winemaker’s comments:

The wine, an attractive, deep ruby red, opens on rich spice, toast and black cherry aromas to which a touch of eucalyptus brings subtlety and aromatic refinement.

Round and smooth on the palate, powerful though not excessively so, it displays excellent balance, combining fine, well-integrated tannins with notes of vanilla, caramel, liquorices and mocha.

The flavorsome finish, generous and complex, is the expression of a successful varietal mix to which an unusual and pleasant dash of Syrah brings a touch of pepper and spice, highlighting the wine's exotic character and warmth.

Like most red wines, Escudo Rojo will benefit from decanting, which allows the wine to reveal the full extent of its aromas and flavors.Escudo Rojo can easily be kept for 3 to 5 years in suitable conditions of storage. Those who appreciate older wines can of course keep Escudo Rojo for longer so as to discover all the qualities of this fine Chilean red wine.

Notes on our Wines of the Week, Recommendations, and Picks:

When you read our thoughts, please remember that you may think differently.  A particular wine may be your favorite and not on our list.  Well, don't stop buying it because of that.  In fact, you may want to email us and let us know about it. These are our opinions but our FIRST recommendation is to go by your own palate.

A couple of other thoughts . . . first, prices are approximate.  They'll vary.  Second, different vintages mean different grapes and different tastes so our recommendation for a 2000 Merlot may not hold for 2001.

And lastly, we remind you to drink responsibly!  Now, all that said, here is a summary of  links to our suggestions.  Find one (or more) and pop the cork!

Read the fine print . . .

Wine consumption can have positive physical benefits or cause possible physical harm . . . the medical community is divided in some areas.  If you have any doubt, check with your doctor before consuming wine or any other alcoholic drink.

Our information is well researched.  Recommendations are based on our opinions at the time of publication.  At the same time, recommendations change.  Also, there may be

significant variance in taste depending on storage, shipping, and other factors.
