Wine of the Week!
Chateau de Pez 2003 St Estephe $35
For the Bordeaux region of France the year 2003 was a really tricky growing season. You may remember… it was the summer of the brutal heat wave in Europe.
Well that hot summer was tough on the vineyards and It’s known as a spotty year. But our wine of the week came through…
Chateau de Pez 2003 St. Estephe is a Bordeaux that fits the classic profile of that great region. Iit’s firm and dense with a mouth filling texture and smoky currant flavor.
De Pez is consistently a terrific producer and they used all their skill in this wine. Made of mostly Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot the wine has the balance of sharp and soft that makes it drinkable young – like now – or capable of holding too.
Decant it and let it breathe awhile then pair it up with lamb or beef for the delicious wine experience of youthful Bordeaux.
Chateau de Pez 2003 St. Estephe runs about thirty five dollars and it’s our wine of the week.

Winemaker's notes and comments: Blend: 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 44% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc, and 3% Petit Verdot.
The sustained color of the wine is highlighted with shades of crimson and orange suggesting the beginning of the wine’s evolution. The nose is initially fruity but opens to lush ripe fruits mingled with aromas of toast and tobacco. The elegant palate is impressive but tight with dense and rich tannins, which is to be expected from such a hot vintage. The alcohol in the wine creates an impressive meatiness and leaves the palate with a soft sweetness. The powerful finish has a hint of acidity and promises to have excellent ageing in wood. This complete, rich and dense Bordeaux merits prolonged aging. Pairs well with pate or a nice hearty stew.
"Intense aromas of currants, spice and berries follow through to a full-bodied palate, with loads of fruit and a velvety finish. Lovely. Score range: 89-91" -Wine Spectator Barrel Sample
The wine exhibits deep color and harmonious composition. This complete, rich and dense Bordeaux merits prolonged aging. Thanks to the quality of its production, Château de Pez is counted among the most highly reputed crus of the Médoc. "...full, plump, and rich, and packed with firm black fruits..." -Wine Enthusiast 91/100
Notes on our Wines of the Week, Recommendations, and Picks:
When you read our thoughts, please remember that you may think differently. A particular wine may be your favorite and not on our list. Well, don't stop buying it because of that. In fact, you may want to email us and let us know about it. These are our opinions but our FIRST recommendation is to go by your own palate.
A couple of other thoughts . . . first, prices are approximate. They'll vary. Second, different vintages mean different grapes and different tastes so our recommendation for a 2000 Merlot may not hold for 2001.
And lastly, we remind you to drink responsibly! Now, all that said, here is a summary of links to our suggestions. Find one (or more) and pop the cork!
