Wine of the Week!
Dr. Loosen 2005 Wehlener Sonnenuhr
Riesling Kabinett $27
We have a wine of the week for you this week that will convert you to the great wine of Germany, Riesling.
This week we’re here with the Dr. Loosen 2005 Wehlener Sonneuhr 2005 Riesling Kabinett. Now that may be a mouthful to say, but it’s also a mouthfilling wine to enjoy.
This Loosen Riesling comes from the incredibly steep hillside vineyard in the Mosel River valley. As a Kabinett Riesling it’s the driest style for German Riesling but has richly vivid fruitiness and that characteristic brace of acidity.
Loosen believes in a minimalist approach to growing the grapes and making this wine, meaning letting nature rule and intruding only with organic materials.
If you’ve never had a world class German Riesling this is where to start. From the floral aroma to the peachy flavor and tingly finish this is a complete and complex wine experience.
Dr. Loosen 2005 Wehlener Sonneuhr 2005 Riesling Kabinett…our wine of the week is about twenty seven dollars, and an experience worth discovering.

Winemaker's notes and comments:
This precipitously steep, rocky vineyard (VAY-len-er ZON-en-oo-er) yields some of the most elegant and sophisticated white wines in the world. The stony gray slate soil gives the wine a delicate and crisp acidity that perfectly balances the pure peachy fruit.
"Loosen’s 2005 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Kabinett offers vivid lime fruit, apple and floral and vanilla aromas, and terrific vivacity with delicacy while yet being concentrated in fruit and almost custardy in richness on the palate. Flowers and vanilla, apple, and slate follow in an exceedingly refined and subtle finish of less overt sweetness than the Bernkasteler Lay Kabinett that preceded it. This is in its understated way another tour de force of Kabinett and a terrific value that – like the superlative aforementioned Bernkasteler – can be expected to mature beautifully for at least 12 or 15 years." -Wine Advocate
The Dr. Loosen Estate has been in the same family for over 200 years. With ungrafted vines averaging 50 years old, some of the best vineyard sites in Germany (four rated grand cru and two premier cru by both the 1868 German classification and the more current Wine Atlas of Germany), Ernst Loosen has the raw materials for stunningly intense, world-class wines. With crop yields almost half of what is permitted by law, only moderate use of organic fertilizers, and old-fashioned cellar practices, Loosen strives to create wines that unmistakably say, "Riesling, Mosel, and Dr. Loosen." In his own words, "The great winemakers I have met invariably possess a clear concept in their mind of what their wine should be. It's a vision that places terrior over technology and grape quality over quantity. This is the level of winemaking we pursue at Dr. Loosen. Our goal is to produce wines that are luscious, complex, and true to their roots."
Notes on our Wines of the Week, Recommendations, and Picks:
When you read our thoughts, please remember that you may think differently. A particular wine may be your favorite and not on our list. Well, don't stop buying it because of that. In fact, you may want to email us and let us know about it. These are our opinions but our FIRST recommendation is to go by your own palate.
A couple of other thoughts . . . first, prices are approximate. They'll vary. Second, different vintages mean different grapes and different tastes so our recommendation for a 2000 Merlot may not hold for 2001.
And lastly, we remind you to drink responsibly! Now, all that said, here is a summary of links to our suggestions. Find one (or more) and pop the cork!
