Well, we’re excited really about Ken’s choice for this week’s Wine of the Week. It’s not hard to get carried away by the beautiful wine of Badia a Coltibuono and their 2004 Chianti Classico.
A thousand year old former abbey is home to Badia wines. The 2004 Chianti Classico is a pure expression of the Sangiovese in the bottle. Its brilliant red color hints at the dark cherry flavors and bright zip of acidity that makes this such a versatile and genuine food wine. Tomato sauces, fresh herbs and simply prepared foods – it doesn’t get much better, or more Tuscan, than that!
The wine is made from organically grown grapes from Badia’s own estate vineyards. That’s really as it should be since there is a sense of the natural when you wander through the Chianti region.
Badia a Coltibuono means “the Abbey of the Good Harvest.” Enough said. Our Wine of the Week is about twenty dollars.

Tasting Notes
Intense ruby red color. Full, intense fragrances of ripe fruit with good complexity on the nose. Full, soft and rounded, with balanced acidity, in the mouth.Vintage notes:
2004 was characterized by a “traditional” climate where alternating periods of atmospheric disturbance and stability provided temperatures in line with historical averages. The spring rains and hot summer resulted in exceptional quality with excellent grape concentrations.
Hand picking made it possible to carefully select the grapes in the vineyards and, subsequently, on the grading table inside the winery. This wine, with ICEA organic certification from 2003, is the result of absolutely natural production methods using hand-picked organically grown Sangiovese and Canaiolo grapes from our vineyards at Badia a Coltibuono. It is considered to be one of the most representative wines of the Chianti Classico appellation.
Notes on our Wines of the Week, Recommendations, and Picks:
When you read our thoughts, please remember that you may think differently. A particular wine may be your favorite and not on our list. Well, don't stop buying it because of that. In fact, you may want to email us and let us know about it. These are our opinions but our FIRST recommendation is to go by your own palate.
A couple of other thoughts . . . first, prices are approximate. They'll vary. Second, different vintages mean different grapes and different tastes so our recommendation for a 2000 Merlot may not hold for 2001.
And lastly, we remind you to drink responsibly! Now, all that said, here is a summary of links to our suggestions. Find one (or more) and pop the cork!
