McLaren Vale Rose` $12
Well it’s the middle of the summer and time for a wine to match the season so here’s our summertime wine of the week.
This week it’s a bright and charming Australian… the Yangarra 2005 McLaren Vale Rose’. What a find! This is a Rose’ that will turn you on to the style. It’s a blend of Grenache and Shiraz and is one of the darker colored rose’s you’ll find. That means that it has a full flavor like oozing ripe strawberry and no cloying sweetness.
The Yangarra Rose’ is bone dry… pleasingly and crisply acidic. Give this wine to someone who turns their nose up at Rose’ and you’ll have a convert! And for twelve dollars a bottle it fits right in to casual summer eating. Treat it like a light red or a bolder white with food and you can drink it just about anytime. And it’s a great way to ease into a summer evening on the patio.

Winemaker’s Notes and Comments: “Not your typical Rose, dark ruby color and powerful fruit flavors of freakish richness from the 70% old vine Grenache fruit and the 30% shiraz; ripe rich strawberries, sour cherry, and fresh sweet rose petals.”
PETER FRASER, Winemaker
• 89 Points/Top Value Wines of 2006 , Wine Enthusiast - "This 70-30 Grenache-Shiraz blend is full but very dry. Yangarra's first Rose has a strong core of minerality, dressed up with blackberry and raspberry fruit and a light orange-peel accent. Roses have reputations for being fun wines, and this one is too, but in this case, fun and serious aren't mutually exclusive." - Darnya Tobey, August 2006
• "One truly spectacular Rosé wine I sampled at the Pink Out was Yangarra from the McLaren Vale region of Australia. It is comprised of 70% Grenache and 30% Shiraz from vines that were planted in 1946. What struck me about this wine is that it had an earthiness on the nose unlike any Rosé wine I had ever tasted. How ironic that Yangarra is Aboriginal for "from the earth." It was truly mouth watering with bright strawberries and superb balance. It is just now available in New Jersey from Atlantic Wine Merchants and sells for around $14/bottle. Ask your favorite wine store to order you some and see just what I am talking about." - George Wackenheim, Wackenheim on Wine
Our Estate in McLaren Vale, South Australia, is situated above a rich basin of vineyards in the Foothills/Blewitt Springs area, specialising in Grenache, Shiraz and Mourvedre. 420 acres of vineyards, pastures, towering native red gums (eucalyptus), natural creeks and dams are what we call the home of Yangarra Estate Vineyard wines. Nestled at the base of the Mount Lofty/Sellicks Hill ranges that surround McLaren Vale, our vineyards experience slightly cooler temperatures than that of the central basin of McLaren Vale. Grenache and Shiraz are the major varieties grown on the estate, and we believe that McLaren Vale (especially the cooler foothills) produces some of the best examples of these varieties in Australia.
We produced our first wines in 2000 with our winemaker Peter Fraser. It is our ambition to become a modern McLaren Vale icon, producing only from our estate grown fruit, using traditional vinification methods such as small batch winemaking and fermentation.Yangarra means "From the earth" in an aboriginal dialect, and it is this philosophy that we try and reflect in our wines — minimum human intervention in viticulture and winemaking to produce special wines that reflect their terroir.
Notes on our Wines of the Week, Recommendations, and Picks:
When you read our thoughts, please remember that you may think differently. A particular wine may be your favorite and not on our list. Well, don't stop buying it because of that. In fact, you may want to email us and let us know about it. These are our opinions but our FIRST recommendation is to go by your own palate.
A couple of other thoughts...first, prices are approximate. They'll vary. Second, different vintages mean different grapes and different tastes so our recommendation for a 2000 Merlot may not hold for 2001.
And lastly, we remind you to drink responsibly! Now, all that said, here is a summary of links to our suggestions. Find one (or more) and pop the cork!
