Wine of the Week!

Gundlach Bundschu 2006        Wine Events
Gewurztraminer
  $25gundlach bundschu gewurztraminer wine

During a recent visit to Sonoma we wandered in to a family owned winery that you should know about, Gundlach Bundschu.

We got a chance to taste their 2006 Gewürztraminer and it’s now our wine of the week. In fact, we fell in love with this Gewurz.

It’s made in the true Alsatian style with the beautiful floral scents so characteristic of the grape but the underlying acidity and spicy finish that makes Gewurz such a unique taste experience.

To us the taste is a fruit salad of ripe and juicy pear just off the tree along with a wedge of mandarin orange and something tropical like mango chunks mixed in. Pretty exotic!

Then top it off with the fact that it’s all balanced by the lingering spiciness when you swallow.

Gundlach Bundschu 2006 Gewurztraminer is about twenty dollars and a great addition to the dinner table, especially if you’re featuring Asian food or something well seasoned like a blackened snapper. But, heck, it’s terrific with a bratwurst from the grill too!

Our versatile wine of the week.

Winemaker's Notes and Comments

Classic aromas of lychee, orange blossom and spice leap from this dry, alsatian-styled gewurztraminer. Ripe, round fruit flavors of white pear, lychee, tangerine and kumquat are lifted by the bright, focused structure into a lingering spicy finish.

Gundlach Bundschu Winery is a family-owned, sixth-generation producer of distinctive wines of site-specific character. The winery's 320-acre Estate Vineyard, christened Rhinefarm in 1858, is located at the crossroads of the Sonoma Valley, Carneros and Napa Valley AVAs, at the base of the Mayacamas Mountain Range. Gundlach Bundschu approaches its vineyards, wines, business and the world with spirit, creativity and dedication to excellence. When you open a bottle of Gundlach Bundschu, you uncork not only the Estate's unique ability to produce profound wines, but also a rich, personal relationship between the Gundlach Bundschu family and the land on which the family lives.

Notes on our Wines of the Week, Recommendations, and Picks:

When you read our thoughts, please remember that you may think differently.  A particular wine may be your favorite and not on our list.  Well, don't stop buying it because of that.  In fact, you may want to email us and let us know about it. These are our opinions but our FIRST recommendation is to go by your own palate.

A couple of other thoughts...first, prices are approximate.  They'll vary.  Second, different vintages mean different grapes and different tastes so our recommendation for a 2000 Merlot may not hold for 2001.

And lastly, we remind you to drink responsibly!  Now, all that said, here is a summary of  links to our suggestions.  Find one (or more) and pop the cork!
