Wine of the Week!

Iron Horse 2005      Listen about Wine Iron Horse Chardonay Wine
Estate Chardonnay
  $25

This week, our Wine of the Week pick is Iron Horse Vineyards 2005 Estate Chardonnay.  Iron Horse has long been one of our favorite wineries, family owned with a personal touch.

Now you may know them more for the terrific sparkling wines they make, but expand your horizons!  This Sonoma chardonnay from their Green Valley estate is a great reflection of today’s stylish chards from California.

We bet you’ll love the balance of fruit and oak, creaminess and tart green apple flavor.  And that’s the real compliment here – the balance.

This is a Chardonnay that will serve you well whatever you’re serving.  Sure it’s great with anything that has cream or butter in it, but I love it with a simply sautéed Petrale sole or some fresh baked halibut with herbs d’provence.

The Iron Horse Chardonnay is what Chardonnay’s supposed to be, richly satisfying and the perfect partner to food.

It’s about twenty five dollars and worth every penny.

Wine on the Radio - December 7, 2007

2005 is the quintessential Green Valley vintage. It beautifully expresses the bright, focused, clean, sweet-tart flavors of cool, foggy Green Valley. It is beautifully balanced, imparting a delightful "leesy", toasty, perfectly integrated barrel character that doesn't overwhelm the fruit. The texture is soft, smooth, silky and sensuous. The finish, long and lingering.

Our concentration on Estate Chardonnay is bearing delicious fruit. We are successfully adding new layers and complexity to our Estate bottling without resorting to more oak and ML. For us, malo-lactic fermentation is simply an acid balancing tool – not a stylistic component, and we feel very strongly about keeping the oak beautifully integrated in the wine.

Food pairings: Enjoy with corn soup, rainbow trout, sole, halibut with mushrooms and asparagus, salmon, steamed lobster, lemon roast chicken served with jasmine rice, veal chop, anything with a cream sauce, goat cheese and walnuts.

Notes on our Wines of the Week, Recommendations, and Picks:

When you read our thoughts, please remember that you may think differently.  A particular wine may be your favorite and not on our list.  Well, don't stop buying it because of that.  In fact, you may want to email us and let us know about it. These are our opinions but our FIRST recommendation is to go by your own palate.

A couple of other thoughts...first, prices are approximate.  They'll vary.  Second, different vintages mean different grapes and different tastes so our recommendation for a 2000 Merlot may not hold for 2001.

And lastly, we remind you to drink responsibly!  Now, all that said, here is a summary of  links to our suggestions.  Find one (or more) and pop the cork!
