Destination
of the Week
Virginia and Wine
Taking a trip to Virginia ? Even if
you're not, you may want to plan one - just for the wine. You're
reading it right . . . the wine. Thomas Jefferson's interest in
wine spawned what has turned out to be a significant wine industry
on the east coast!
The soil types vary widely which makes
for many different tastes among the Viognier, Cabernet Franc and
Merlot grapes, many of which score high (85 to 88) in Wine Spectator
reviews.
So pile in the car and make your way
to Jefferson Vineyards - between Monticello and Ash Lawn. If you
guessed that this is where Jefferson launched his vineyard, you're
right. From there, head to Barboursville Winery and Palladio Restaurant
or to White Hall or Veritas Vineyards. Great wines and terrific
views of the Blue Ridge Mountains .
All told, you can go to eighty-six
wineries and over 200 vineyards without leaving the state. And if
you plan your trip at the right time you can hit a Spring, Summer
or Autumn wine festival.
Plan on it.
