Graves and
White Bordeaux Graves
and White Bordeaux Listing
When you hear the word "Bordeaux"
you automatically think "red wine," don't you? It's pretty logical.
Most Bordeaux are red, made primarily
from Cabernet or merlot.
But don't
overlook the white wine of Bordeaux. These are usually blends
of sauvignon Blanc and Semillon and each grape adds something
to the party.
Sauvignon Blanc
is crispy and aromatic, while the Semillon adds depth and texture.
But what makes them interesting is
their home turf. The best white Bordeaux come from the Graves
district and especially a zone called Pessac-Léognan. Here's
why: Graves is named for its gravelly soils which add another
dimension to the wine, sort of a flinty taste.
Maybe tasting the gravel is the power
of suggestion, but it's their signature . . . just as New Zealand's
are grassy and California's fruitier.
White Bordeaux are delightful food
wines, particularly with fish dishes or maybe even that Quiche
Lorraine for brunch. So try something from off the beaten track
and pay a visit to Graves.
Pop the cork.
