Wines of Greece

The Greek Island Santorini - copyright 1999, Corkscrew Productions, LLC

Greece has an ancient winemaking history and culture – and one look at the map tells us why it’s a winemaker’s dream…

Greece is surrounded on three sides by the sea which gives it that temperate maritime climate that grapes just seem to love…and it’s filled with mountains and river valleys that contort the landscape, leading to all kinds of microclimates…

And you have to remember that the Greeks have been making wine for thousands of years so they should have the hang of it!

Two key regions to look for are the islands of Santorini and Patras…

The whites are zesty and acidic and ideal for a cuisine that features strong cheeses and sea foods.  The reds tend to be deep and really full bodied… perfect with juicy grilled lamb chops!

Now Greek wines aren’t found everywhere but a great way to give these wines a try is in their natural environment.

So if you can’t get to Santorini or Patras – or even Athens, head for a local Greek restaurant.  Chances are they’ll have a number of wines you can sample.  Then shout OPAH and…Pop the Cork™!
