Wine of the Week!
Henschke Julius Eden Valley Riesling 2006 $26
Perhaps the most under-appreciated great white wine in American is Riesling. But we’ll change that with our wine of the week. It’s Henschke 2006 “Julius” Riesling from Australia.
This is a crisply dry wine. The fruit is citrusy without being tart and complemented by a delicate ripe peach flavor and an aroma like blooming honeysuckle climbing the trellis.
But what really rounds it out is the zippy acidity. With the fruitiness, aromatics, dryness and acidity all balanced in your glass this is an amazingly versatile wine.
Try it with a pork chop or some salmon off the grill; try it with spicy Szechuan chicken; try it with jumbo prawns or a tangy shrimp cocktail; try it with, hey, just try it all by itself!
The Henschke “Julius” Riesling runs about twenty-eight dollars
So expand your wine horizons - and your food options - with Riesling.

Winemaker’s Notes and Comments:
Riesling is the classic grape variety of Germany and one of the earliest varieties brought to South Australia. Cyril Henschke developed the Henschke reputation for premium Riesling wines as early as the 1950s, from the vineyard areas of Eden Valley, Keyneton and Springton.
These dry, food-oriented wines are clean and crisp and have the ability to age into delicious marmalade on toast flavors, due to the cool climate of the Eden Valley region. This region provides excellent ripening conditions for the Riesling grape and has a unique track record of exceptional aging potential for the variety.
The 2006 Julius Eden Valley Riesling is green gold in color. The nose is very lifted, floral and perfumed with rose petals, citrus blossom, lime/lemon zest, hints of slate and green peppercorns. The crisp, dry palate shows sweet fruit with rich flavors of lemon and lime, fresh acidity and excellent length.
Pale yellow. Bright citrus and quince aromas are energized by talc-y minerals, white flowers and an exotic green cardamom quality. Vibrant lime and pink grapefruit flavors display impressive precision and depth, with a riper orange quality building on the close. Strikes a balance of freshness and richness, with outstanding clarity and persistence." Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar (Steven Tanzer, 9-01-07)

Notes
on our Wines of the Week, Recommendations, and Picks:
When you read our thoughts,
please remember that you may think differently. A particular wine
may be your favorite and not on our list. Well, don't stop buying
it because of that. In fact, you may want to email
us and let us know about it. These are our opinions but our
FIRST recommendation is to go by your own palate.
A couple of other thoughts . . . first, prices
are approximate. They'll vary. Second, different vintages mean
different grapes and different tastes so our recommendation for
a 2000 Merlot may not hold for 2001.
And lastly, we remind you to drink responsibly!
Now, all that said, here is a summary of links to our suggestions.
