The
Wine Experience
Wine of the Week! September 15 , 2006
Listen
Norton
Privada 2004 $16

With
the brilliant snow-capped Andes Mountains
rising in the near
distance, the vineyards of Argentina’s Mendoza region are
the heart and soul of Argentina wine country. The Wine Experience
Wine of the Week captures that soul: Norton Privada 2004.
Check
out the winery’s description: Privada refers to the
family’s private reserve, originally enjoyed with only our
closest friends.
So
make some new friends – with the wine. This one is
big and full bodied. It’s a blend of Cabernet, Malbec,
which is the classic grape of Argentina, and Merlot, so the flavors
are layered and complex. From the dense plum-like cabernet to
the dark berry fruitiness of Malbec to the bittersweet cocoa of
Merlot, this wine has a lot to give!
Its
and ideal match for grilled meat or savory roast beef and its
a hearty mouthful of wine.
Norton
Privada consistently gets high recognition from the critics…
especially as a terrific value. At about sixteen dollars
it’s bursting with character.
Enjoy
the wine of the week, Norton Privada 2004
Pop
the cork™.
Comments
and Winemaker’s Notes
A
love story: Norton winery was founded in 1895 by Edmund James
Palmer Norton, an English engineer who worked for the Railroad
Company 'Buenos Aires al Pacífico'. He fell in love with
a young woman from Mendoza and at the same time he fell in love
with Mendoza.
The
harmonic blend of Cabernet Sauvignon grapes, Malbec, and Merlot,
represents the singular bond between nature and the passion of
our people. The name “Privada” refers to the family’s
private reserve originally enjoyed with only our closest friends.
Now we have reserved some of this great wine to share with you.
Produced from 50-80 year old vines, this wine has great
structure and depth. Notes of blackberry and raspberry; drink
now or hold for a few years.
The Wine Spectator Burly style, with dense raspberry and blackberry
jam flavors followed by bittersweet cocoa, beef and loam notes.
Muscular finish. Needs brief cellaring to round into form. Malbec,
Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Best from 2006 through 2008. 600
cases made. Score: 91. —James Molesworth, October 15,
2005.

Notes
on our Wines of the Week, Recommendations, and Picks:
When you read our thoughts,
please remember that you may think differently. A particular wine
may be your favorite and not on our list. Well, don't stop buying
it because of that. In fact, you may want to email
us and let us know about it. These are our opinions but our
FIRST recommendation is to go by your own palate.
A couple of other thoughts . . . first, prices
are approximate. They'll vary. Second, different vintages mean
different grapes and different tastes so our recommendation for
a 2000 Merlot may not hold for 2001.
And lastly, we remind you to drink responsibly!
Now, all that said, here is a summary of links to our suggestions.
Find one (or more) and pop the cork!
