Wine of the Week! September 22 , 2006
Listen
Seghesio
2004 Sonoma Zinfandel $16
OK,
you know that we’re big fans of that true American wine,
California Zinfandel. And that’s why our wine of the
week pick for you this week is a classic Zin from the Seghesio
family, Seghesio 2004 Sonoma Zinfandel.
Seghesio
has become synonymous with really good Zin, and this one is true
to their classic style. It’s got that fruity juiciness
that stands out in Zin and tastes like a spoonful of blackberry
jam. But there’s also a little spicy character, kind
of like a dash of black pepper, so it’s not just a big fruit
bomb.
This
wine has character and it’s just the ticket for all kinds
of foods. Try it especially with whatever you like to barbecue,
from chicken to ribs not to mention a cheeseburger!
Seghesio
has been making wine since the late 1800’s in Sonoma and
its still a family run winery.
The
Seghesio 2004 Sonoma Zinfandel runs about sixteen dollars and
as our wine of the week you should have some ready for your family
table.
Pop
the cork™.
Comments
and Winemaker Notes:
When
Grandfather Edoardo first planted Zinfandel on our Home Ranch
in Alexander Valley in 1895, Zinfandel was known as the "boss"
grape in Sonoma County. It earned its popularity by thriving
in the California sun and providing good color and sugar at harvest.
To the many Italian immigrants in Sonoma County, Zinfandel was
reminiscent of the fruit-driven wines of their homeland.
Because wine was an everyday part of the family meal and, the
fact that Zinfandel is drinkable within a year of harvest, it
became preferable over varietals that need years of aging.
The
Sites:
This wine comes primarily from four estate vineyards: Home Ranch,
San Lorenzo and River Road in Alexander Valley, and Cortina in
Dry Creek Valley. Several of these sites have produced Zinfandel
for over a century, while the newer sites benefit from proprietary
clones and the most advanced viticultural practices. Yields are
kept at or below 4 tons per acre.
The
Wine:
Every year, we bring in approximately 35 lots of Zinfandel averaging
25-30 years in age. Each of these lots is produced under the careful
eye of our winemaker, Ted Seghesio. The best of these lots
are selected to make Sonoma Zinfandel. A small amount of
Petite Sirah is added to the wine for added complexity.
The result is a tantalizing black raspberry and classic briary
flavored wine with a balance of components for which Seghesio
wines are known

Notes
on our Wines of the Week, Recommendations, and Picks:
When you read our thoughts,
please remember that you may think differently. A particular wine
may be your favorite and not on our list. Well, don't stop buying
it because of that. In fact, you may want to email
us and let us know about it. These are our opinions but our
FIRST recommendation is to go by your own palate.
A couple of other thoughts . . . first, prices
are approximate. They'll vary. Second, different vintages mean
different grapes and different tastes so our recommendation for
a 2000 Merlot may not hold for 2001.
And lastly, we remind you to drink responsibly!
Now, all that said, here is a summary of links to our suggestions.
Find one (or more) and pop the cork!
