The Wine
Experience
Pronouncing Wine Words: Shiraz
One of the great things
we just love about wine is that you never stop learning. It's like
a continuous self improvement program!
When you work on geography
and history you learn to appreciate wine countries and cultures
. . . and listening to the show you can get a lot of work on your
language skills! Lots of tongue twister foreign names and regional
words can trip you up!
Here's a good one .
. . how do you say S-H-I-R-A-Z? Well we say SCHER-AHHZ .
. . but don't call it that in Sydney. You see my mates there say
SHE-RAZZ, and it's their most popular wine.
Then there's the French.
When they tell you what's in those yummy wines from the Rhone Valley
they call the grape by the traditional name, Syrah ("SEE-RAH").
Which most of us would pronounce SIR-RAH.
So don't be confused
by a little tongue twisting because it's all the same grape an inky
dark, jammy wine no matter what you call it!
Grab your glass and
pass the SHE-RAZZ, SIR-RAH, SCHER-AHHZ . . . heck, pass the wine!
Pop the Cork™.
