Von Buhl 2008 Riesling Kabinett Armand for $20: The Wine Experience

Here’s a tip! Don’t be afraid of German wine! Yes, the names, the labels, even the tastes Armand Riesling Kabinett from von Buhl
can be confusing… but a great place to start is with our wine of the week, Von Buhl 2008 Riesling Kabinett Armand.

Why start here? Because it’s a true expression of the drier Kabinett style of Riesling.

There’s sweetness, which makes it perfect for spicy or Asian food. It’s low alcohol, which makes it perfect for summer sipping. And there’s a wonderful balance of fruitiness, minerality and acid which makes it a delightful taste experience all by itself.

Riesling is an underappreciated wine and German wines tend to confuse us. So try something different this summer and look for the Von Buhl Riesling at your wine shop.

Chill it nicely, head for the deck or patio, put your feet up, enjoy the summer day and take a sip. It’s like grapefruit with sugar dusted on it with a refreshingly crisp finish.

Von Buhl Riesling Kabinett is about twenty dollars.

Winemaker’s Notes and Comments:

Beeswax and grapefruit flavors grace this racy Riesling. A buried mineral streak refreshes on the finish with mouthwatering acidity. Drink now through 2020. 800 cases imported." (03/10) According to Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "I’m happy to report that, on balance, von Buhl’s 2008 Riesling Kabinett Armand can be well-recommended, because otherwise I would not have had chance to expound on its amazing details. At 7.5% alcohol, nearly 12 grams of acid, and 62 grams of residual sugar, I feared that this record-setter (for surely it must set some record!) would taste as grotesque as it looked. In fact, yellow plum, lemon, and grapefruit offer a refreshing as well as palate-scouring impression, while the wine’s sheer sense of density – not precluding lightness and lift – evidently helps buffer the enamel-effacing intensity of its acids. Extremely low pH has the effect of invigorating tactile impingement but at the same time a faint sense of drying in the finish. Try this young in some extreme culinary situations, or hold on to a few bottles to see whether its evolution might be analogous to that of an extreme Mosel or Saar Kabinett

Past Recommendations, Picks, and Wines of the Week

Notes on our Wines of the Week, Recommendations, and Picks:

When you read our thoughts, please remember that you may think differently. A particular wine may be your favorite and not on our list. Well, don't stop buying it because of that. In fact, you may want to
EMAIL us and let us know about it. These are our opinions but our FIRST recommendation is to go by your own palate.

A couple of other thoughts . . . first, prices are approximate. They'll vary. Second, different vintages mean different grapes and different tastes so our recommendation for a 2000 Merlot may not hold for 2001.

And lastly, we remind you to drink responsibly! Now, all that said, here is a summary of links to our suggestions. Find one (or more) and pop the cork!
