L'Ecole No. 41 Merlot Columbia Valley 2004 $30: The Wine Experience

This week we head to the northwest and a terrific Merlot from Washington as our wine of the week. It’s L’Ecole Number 4l'Ecole Merlot Wine from California1 2004 Merlot from the Columbia Valley.

Named after the old schoolhouse that’s home to this family owned winery, L’Ecole is French for school and Number 41 was the district back in 1915. But there’s nothing old fashioned about this wine!

L’Ecole Merlot is bursting with the dark berry and black cherry flavors. There’s a little spiciness when you sip and definite flavors of mocha along with the fruit flavors.

This is sophisticated wine with layers of complexity and with touches of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cab Franc and Petit Verdot blended, giving it great structure.

If you love really good Merlot, the L’Ecole goes right to the head of the class!

L’Ecole Number 41 is about thirty dollars and it’s a Merlot that deserves to be sought after and savored.

Winemaker's notes and comments:
Rich and spicy, with aromatic aromas of nutmeg, clove and cinnamon, this Merlot shows ripe black plum, blackberry and dark flavors encased in a peppery, chocolate, black cherry finish.

Past Recommendations, Picks, and Wines of the Week

Notes on our Wines of the Week, Recommendations, and Picks:

When you read our thoughts, please remember that you may think differently. A particular wine may be your favorite and not on our list. Well, don't stop buying it because of that. In fact, you may want to email us and let us know about it. These are our opinions but our FIRST recommendation is to go by your own palate.

A couple of other thoughts . . . first, prices are approximate. They'll vary. Second, different vintages mean different grapes and different tastes so our recommendation for a 2000 Merlot may not hold for 2001.

And lastly, we remind you to drink responsibly! Now, all that said, here is a summary of links to our suggestions. Find one (or more) and pop the cork!
